A Brief History of Modern Car Graphics

Car Graphics come in many shapes and sizes. Many people like to put something on the car to give it a little personality. There are only a few car companies, and they only have a few models each, so whatever car you are driving, you can be sure that there is another one just like it in your town if not at the next traffic light. Putting car graphics on a car is a way of accessorizing your car and it can be done fairly inexpensively.

The car graphics that can be seen on the sides of vehicles can be purchased for as little as sixty dollars. There are a lot of variables and the size of the graphic as well as the type of vinyl it is printed on will all have an effect on the price. Another aspect that affect the price is the artwork. In the last few years machines have come out that do a good job of printing on vinyl. This has given graphic artist new flexibility and new opportunities. There has been an explosion of new ideas using the creativity of the artist and the new tools in the graphic arts computer programs and the incredible job that printers are now able to do. It could be argued that artists could do practically anything even before computers but the trouble is that it was very time consuming and in the end, expensive.

In the eighties several things happened almost at once. First, software programs oriented toward the graphic arts were introduced. Autocad was the first to come out with a program but it was mainly for architects and just did drafting. Soon after Adobe started coming out with some of their amazing graphic arts software. Later Corel came out with a program called Corel Draw. Soon after the computer started making inroads printers were being upgraded. At first the quality was rough but then improved and large format printers were created by Kodak in the early 1990′s. These first printers ushered in an era in which a person could come up with an abstract idea, develop this idea in a program, use some of the tools of the program to enhance the design and then print it on poster size paper. While this was a remarkable achievement it would be a few more years until ink was developed that could withstand the ravages of weather.
